(application documents directly submitted by the applicant will not be accepted.) selected candidates are recommended to mext from the university in mid february. mext then conducts a screening and selects those applicants as scholarship grantees at the end of may.

application for the following fiscal year (april, october) is open between march and may, and the primary screening (documentary examination, written test and interview) is conducted between june and august by the local japanese embassies. those who passed the primary screening would be able to apply for issuing the “l(fā)etter of provisional acceptance” from the universities they wish to study at. the universities judge whether the candidates are worth accepting or not, from their application documents. the candidates who successfully obtained the letter of acceptance are commended to mext by the local japanese embassy through the ministry of foreign affairs in september. mext then conducts a secondary screening and selects those applicants who have found recipient universities as scholarship grantees.

apply for “l(fā)etter of provisional acceptance”
please send the following documents to the international admmissions office by email or by post (registered express mail) by the deadline. please state who you wish your academic advisor to be at the time of sending those documents.
necessary documents are:
a copy of the certificate issued by japanese embassy or consulate general in your country
copies of documents with the seal of japanese embassy or consulate general:
application form
placement preference form for japanese government (monbukagakusho:mext) scholarship (if included)
field of study and study program
academic transcript
recommendation form(s)
medical certificate
graduation certificate or degree certificate (or an attested document certifying that the applicant will graduate from the school, where applicable)
abstracts of thesis
notification of the result
after examining your application and making the judgment, the international admissions office will inform you the result by email. it normally takes around two weeks if you have obtained academic advisor’s consent in advance, and around two weeks to one month if you have not obtained any consent prior to the application. therefore, make sure to apply for the letter in plenty of time, considering the deadline set by the local japanese embassies.
